650km Walk for Accountability

Author: Colin Craig 2013/09/16

Here's a walk worth supporting. Members of the Treaty 3 Grassroots Citizens Coalition will be arriving in Winnipeg tomorrow after a 650km walk from Lac des Mille Lacs First Nation (Ontario.)

The group started the trek in early September to push for greater accountability on reserves. I've known the organizer, Kelvin Chicago-Boucher, for a while now and support what he's trying to do. In fact, his organization has put forward some good proposals worth considering.

For example, he wants to end situations whereby reserve administrations sign-up dead people to their band membership lists; thus artifically increasing the funding they receive from Ottawa. Another interesting idea is to have arms length people oversee band elections to help ensure it's run right.
